Mazda took the stage at the Japan Mobility Show with the stunning Vision X-Coupe, a bold step into the future. The concept redefines the brand’s “Kodo – Soul of Motion” design language, blending minimalist Japanese elegance with raw performance.
Described as a four-door coupe crossover, the Vision X-Coupe takes cues from the European Mazda 6e electric sedan but introduces something entirely new — a plug-in hybrid system built around a twin-rotor turbocharged rotary engine, paired with an electric motor and battery pack. Together, they produce an impressive 500 horsepower (510 PS).
In pure electric mode, the Vision X-Coupe can travel up to 99 miles (160 km), while the rotary engine acts as a generator once the battery depletes, extending the total driving range to around 497 miles (800 km). Mazda notes that these figures are likely based on WLTP testing standards rather than EPA estimates.
Interestingly, Mazda claims that by using carbon-neutral fuel derived from microalgae, combined with its proprietary CO₂ capture technology, the Vision X-Coupe “actually helps reduce atmospheric CO₂ the more it’s driven.”
Measuring 198.8 inches (5,050 mm) in length, 78.5 inches (1,995 mm) in width, and 58.2 inches (1,480 mm) in height, the Vision X-Coupe is notably larger than the outgoing Mazda 6. Details on battery size, acceleration, and other performance specs remain under wraps for now.
Alongside it, Mazda also unveiled the Vision X-Compact, a sporty hot hatch concept designed to “strengthen the emotional bond between humans and cars” through a fusion of digital sensory modeling and empathetic AI — a glimpse into Mazda’s intelligent, human-centered future.
